Korean Street Toast

It may not be what you think. 토스트 (which is the korean spelling of the word "toast") can come in a couple of different varieties: a sweet dessert or a savory sandwich. I'm not a fan of the sweet kind, as it's usually a hunk of white wonder bread 3-4" thick with ice cream or other cream/chocolate syrup on top. No thanks.

My personal favorite toast place is called "Isaac Toast", only they pronounce it "ee-sack". Go figure. You'll see little tiny storefronts all over Seoul, where there's only some fridges/freezers for food, a couple of grills, and an ahjumma (middle-aged woman) cooking the toast. There's a bunch of different fillings, from anything like ham, cheese and egg, to a marinated chicken patty, to potato. The one I always get is called "Ham Special", where you get a slice of ham, an egg, cheese, some vegetables (I think cabbage?), pickles, and this special sauce. What other wizardry they use, I'm not sure, but I know it includes cooking it in butter on the grill. Butter = magic.

I seriously love this. The camera didn't catch it, but there was definitely a twinkle in my eye.

The ahjumma starts cooking the egg and ham, then grabs a big stick of butter and rubs it on the grill where she's going to put the bread. Then she starts assembling all the pieces and putting the sauce and veggies on. As soon as it's golden brown, she puts it piping hot in a paper sleeve. I've watched her do it numerous times, but I don't know if I'm missing her secret, because I just can't recreate this at home.

This is the "ham special". I can't believe I held out from eating it long enough to take a picture.

This is what the ham special looks like inside. I understand this looks like a hot mess, but it does not accurately depict the delicious taste.

And now I just might get toast for lunch tomorrow after orientation/placement test. Writing up these posts always makes me feel phantom hunger.
